Demonstration Game

Together with your students, make this Little Card Chart and leave it out for reference during the game.

The Deal

One card at a time, alternating sides, deal five facedown cards to you and your students (who are playing as a team). No one may look at their cards. The stack is placed face down in the center. The top card is not turned face up next to the stack.

Practice Game with Students

During this practice game, you will handle all the cards, but the students will make all the decisions for their own plays.

1. You were the dealer, so the students 'draw' the first card. Draw the top card and don't look at it.

2. Show it to the students. Ask them if they want to keep it. Together, they shake their heads 'no' and say they don't want it. You place it face up next to the stack to begin the discard pile. "Good move, everybody! You didn't want this big half rest card, did you?"

3. Now it’s your turn. Let’s say you draw an eighth rest, a small value, so you want to keep the card. You have the choice to exchange it with the card at either end of your row of five cards. You choose the left side. You lift up the first card on the left without looking at it and replace it with the eighth rest card placed face down.

4. You look at the card now in your hand without showing it to the students. It's a half note, a "big" card you do not want, so you place it face up in the discard pile.

5. As before, draw a card for the students. Let’s say you drew a sixteenth note for them. Great! You will start the exchange at one end of their left row.

6. You place the sixteenth note face down and show them the end card. They indicate they want to keep it, so you switch it with the next card in their row.

7. That card is a dotted half note, so they tell you to toss it in the discard pile and their turn is finished.

8. Throughout the game, everyone tries to remember the cards they have.

9. The demonstration game continues with one of you says, "Five Hiding" and both of you scoring your cards with magic notes.
