Play and Pass

Play

The player opposite the dealer takes the first turn. If possible he chooses and discards one of his three face-up cards into either of the center piles. The card must be either one value higher or one value lower than the top card. Either choice is correct and the card may be a note or a rest.

He says the name of the card on top of the pile and the name of the card he is placing on top of it.

A dotted note must always be used between non-dotted notes or rests. He replaces that card with one from his pile.

Players take turns discarding cards. Wrap-arounds (sixteenth to whole and vice versa) are necessary.

Pass

If someone doesn’t have a card to play, he says “Pass,” and the other player can play.

Occasionally, the other player cannot play and says "Pass," too. When this happens, each player takes a card from one of the side piles and turns it face up on one of the center piles. It's also possible that neither player can play on these two new cards, so they each say "Pass" again. Eventually, the game resumes.

If the side piles should run out of cards, the two faceup cards on the center piles remain in place, and the rest of the pile is turned face down to become a side pile.

The player who discards all his cards, including the cards in his hand and the three cards on the floor, is the first winner.

The other player continues to draw and play more cards so he can finish second.
