Variations

With a Rainbow Xylophone

While singing the song: before each tone of the scale, you play the pitch once on the rainbow xylophone. This idea came from June Tak (South Korea) and adds a nice touch to the game. Coordinating the rainbow xylophone, singing, and making the motions can take just a little practice, so you might want to try this before playing the game with your students.

Question and Answer

Variation 1

Sing the song together, but use questions instead of statements. For example:

Teacher: “Where is the bass clef F clef?” without doing the motions.
Students: "Here is the bass clef F clef?" as they trace the bass clef.

  • Teacher: "Where is the bass clef F clef?" (without doing the motions)
  • Students: "Here is the bass clef F clef" (as students trace the lines)
  • Teacher: "Where is the treble clef G clef?" (without doing the motions)
  • Students: "This is the treble clef G clef" (as students trace the brace)
  • Etc.

To finish, you and the students sing the lyrics and the descending scale together.

Variation 2

Sing the lines out of sequence as a question, and the students will answer you. For example:

  • Teacher: "Where are the lines?" (without doing the motions)
  • Students: "Here are the lines" (as students trace the lines)
  • Teacher: "Where is the brace?" (without doing the motions)
  • Students: "This is the brace" (as students trace the brace)
  • Etc.
To finish, you and the students sing the lyrics and the descending scale together or separately.
